Team Spotlight: Team 4013 Clockwork Mania of Orlando, FL

Clockwork mania 1This team has been waiting for FIRST STEAMWorks since they started.  Meet 4013 Clockwork Mania!

4013 Clockwork Mania’s home is Orlando Science Schools, which is a nonprofit, tuition-free, STEM-focused public charter school. We are also graciously sponsored by Lockheed Martin, NASA, Mills & Nebraska Door & Trim, International Fluid Power Society and Walt Disney World Co. Clockwork Mania team members also compete in the FIRST Tech Challenge as 5070 N.U.T.S. (Nerds United for Technological Superiority) and 6379 Clockwork Mania.

We have been a steampunk team from our inception. We were blown away when we received an email from Frank Merrick (Director of FRC) letting us know that we played a small role regarding FIRST deciding on a steampunk theme for 2017, after Frank talked to our team members in the Palmetto Regional last season.

Team Spotlight: Team 79 Krunch of Tarpon Springs, FL

Krunch 1Next up – Team 79 Krunch, of Tarpon Springs, Florida!

Team 79 Krunch based out of East Lake High School in Tarpon Springs, Florida sets a shining example for others in the area. As Tampa Bay’s longest lasting team we have been gifted the ability to create a legacy in the last twenty years of our existence that is unparalleled. By volunteering our time and energy into giving back to the community, we are able to funnel resources into STEM education, as well as participate in demonstrations at local elementary schools to spread the values of FIRST and Gracious Professionalism.

Our team is also responsible for the bulk of volunteers that help ROBOTICON  in St. Krunch 2Petersburg, Florida run smoothly every year. Taking initiative in our community to improve the world in which we live is the foundation of our program and is something we intend to continue into our future as a longstanding team.

One drive that we run every year is the Mobile Hazardous Waste Collection. Over the past twenty years we have collected over 1 million pounds of waste of which 98% is converted directly into renewable resources. The collection in pounds is the equivalent of 36 garbage trucks of trash eliminated from our environment.

Outside of volunteering, the team gets together for “socials.” The most popular being a cookout where we enjoyed barbeque and played kickball. The bonding outside of build season allows our team to be comfortable with each other and allows for a smoother build season. Another strategy we implement to ensure build season goes smoothly is a preseason. We use this time to train first year students on the machines as well as outline how the process of build season works.

Getting to know each other by building a robot and relationships has allowed Team 79 Krunch to be successful in every aspect. We are eager to unleash our latest creation and wish all teams the best of luck! It’s Krunch time!!

It totally is! Come see Krunch at the Orlando Regional March 10th & 11th!

Team Spotlight: Team 5283 Torque of Tampa

TorqueMeet Team Torque #5283 of Tampa, Florida!

The Torque Team started in 2013 at King High School by two students who competed in FIRST LEGO League in their middle school and wished to continue in FIRST Robotics. After some recruitment, the two managed to acquire a school mentor as well as five other team members. As a rookie team, they built their robot out of wood, and the team ended up having the only wooden robot at the 2014  Orlando Regional.  The team of seven managed to win the Highest Rookie Seed Award and the Rookie Inspiration Award, and the team members learned a great deal about typical FRC robots at competition. With the new experience gained, the team members jumped into the next year with newfound rigor and motivation.
