Team Spotlight: Meet Team 180 S.P.A.M. of Martin County, FL

SPAMThere’s spam, and then there’s S.P.A.M. : Speed – Power – AND Maneuverability.  Meet team 180!

This season marks 20 years of FIRST Robotics Competition Team 180 S.P.A.M., 20 robots for FRC, and all 19 years of the Orlando Regional.

It’s always a homecoming party for this team from Martin County, FL when they meet in Orlando to see old friends, touch base with countless alumni and make new friends for years to come. Last year S.P.A.M. was awarded their team’s first Chairman’s Award at this regional as well as winning the tournament. Needless to say, they can’t wait to return to this special venue to see everyone and defend their title.

The off-season was another busy summer and fall as they worked in their community to sustain the 22 FIRST programs they have and added two more. They ran three summer camps and hosted and ran one FIRST LEGO League practice tournament and three FIRST LEGO League qualifying tournaments. And for the 5th year in a row, the team has overlapped build season with the Martin County Fair spending nine days demonstrating their robots, overlooking FIRST LEGO League activities, and sharing their story, enthusiasm and FIRST with the community. As a result, the fair has opened a permanent Science Center where S.P.A.M. takes the lead in generating excitement for STEM.

S.P.A.M. is proud of the relationships they build with their sponsors and honored to be among the teams sponsored by Pratt & Whitney, a founding sponsor, UTC, FPL, and UL. This year they benefitted from funds left over in 3 political campaigns including major funding from Florida Senate President Joe Negron. At last count they had 59 large and small sponsors helping to fund this team of 77 students.

A culture of Gracious Professionalism is also an important part of this team’s history so if you need anything when you’re in Orlando, do not hesitate to visit their pit, stop them in the arena, or find them in the stands. They genuinely want every team to compete to the best of their ability and have a great experience at this very special regional.

But make no mistake. S.P.A.M. is UNITING their Crew, READYING their Contraption, and PREPARING to Take Flight. They’re coming to play FIRST STEAMworks!

You can see S.P.A.M. doing all of the above , live at the Orlando Regional March 10-11 at the CFE Arena at the University of Central Florida!
