They do more than howl at the moon. Team 5145 WolfBotics of Gainesville, FL has teeth.
FRC Team 5145 – WolfBotics, hails from Gainesville FL’s St. Francis Catholic High School. WolfBotics is a relatively new program competing in only its fourth year. Its inaugural year, they were fortunate enough to get invited to the World Championship in St Louis by winning the Rookie All-Star at that year’s regional in Orlando. During each successive year, they have improved and learned what it takes to be a competitive team, all the while dedicating themselves to helping out others and demonstrating that ‘Gracious Professionalism’!
In the 2016 Orlando Regional, WolfBotics was honored to get the invitation into their first alliance finals, making it all the way into the quarterfinals. WolfBotics wrapped up last year’s competition by finishing in the Top 15 for offense – their highest placing yet.
Being a small team, members are able to learn a little bit of everything, while each individual, still has the ability to pursue their area of interest. Students pursue mechanics, electronics, pneumatics, and programming among other team-related functions. Veteran members mentor the newer members the skills to succeed in both the team and in other areas of life. Members get the chance to learn life-skills that are necessary for their success, such as public speaking, group debate, design discussions, time management, and team building. When there is down time, they take some group time and play a team-building game.
WolfBotics worked with sponsors from NASA, SWE, the University of Florida, and received a 3D-printer from Ekocycle. They are currently preparing to pursue other sponsors for their upcoming season and beyond. WolfBotics also hosts organizes the Swamp Stomp, a FIRST LEGO League qualifying event for north Florida.
