Meet Team Torque #5283 of Tampa, Florida!
The Torque Team started in 2013 at King High School by two students who competed in FIRST LEGO League in their middle school and wished to continue in FIRST Robotics. After some recruitment, the two managed to acquire a school mentor as well as five other team members. As a rookie team, they built their robot out of wood, and the team ended up having the only wooden robot at the 2014 Orlando Regional. The team of seven managed to win the Highest Rookie Seed Award and the Rookie Inspiration Award, and the team members learned a great deal about typical FRC robots at competition. With the new experience gained, the team members jumped into the next year with newfound rigor and motivation.
Experiencing tremendous growth during its sophomore year, the team grew to twenty members and tied for third place as the first seed in the 2014 off-season Panther Prowl event. In addition, the team took home the “We Really Like You” award from Panther Prowl. During the 2015 Recycle Rush season, the team was fortunate enough to be able to compete in two tournaments! In the South Florida Regional, the team placed as the thirteenth seeded team out of fifty competing teams and made it as far as the quarterfinals! The team continues to grow each year in membership and resources, as they aim to expand their legacy into the future.
Torque Team is also active in community outreach. The team has volunteered several times with Suncoast FLL in order to help with running and judging the tournaments of younger FIRST members. In addition, the team is active in its local community in an attempt to increase its presence and inspire the youth to pursue the STEM field and similar activities that may at first seem intimidating. Examples include: presenting to the Boy Scouts, the local Turner-Bartels K-8 school and the local Williams Middle School. The team has also participated in a few technology expositions to increase awareness about FIRST and promote the field of STEM.
Torque Team would like to thank its sponsors for their support. The team would like to thank its corporate sponsors as well as its parent sponsors and volunteers who help to make this all possible.
Come see Team Torque at the Orlando Regional March 10 & 11!
