Team Spotlight: Meet Team 3556 GET SMART, of Lake City, FL

Get Smart Group

As we round the corner, with one week left before the  Orlando Regional, we’re excited to be able to introduce you to some of the great teams competing at the 18th Annual FIRST Robotics Competition  in Orlando.

We’ll kick things off with the Gateway Engineering Team of Students Mastering Animation Robotics and Technology, also known as GET SMART FRC Team 3556.

We are a six-year team composed of 26 students and 10 mentors working together in our head coach’s classroom at Columbia High School in Lake City, Florida. Since our rookie year in 2011, we’ve been honored with three different awards: Gracious Professionalism and the Finalist Award at the Orlando Regional, and the Judges Award at Tempest N’ Tampa. However, these awards are nothing compared to the effect that FIRST has had on our community.

Thanks to one of our founding sponsors, PotashCorp White Springs, we were able to form 11 FIRST LEGO League teams in our county in 2015, creating a total of 13 other FIRST teams that GET SMART mentors. This explosion of FIRST growth in our region led to us showcasing our outreach robot at the North Florida FLL Regional Competition in January 2016.

GET SMART with FIRST president Don Bossi at  North Florida FLL Regional Competition

Here we had the opportunity to talk Don Bossi, the President of FIRST, for two collective hours about our team, our plans for the future, and how FIRST has affected our lives. In fact, we found out that Dean Kamen has not seen Monty Python!

Thanks to the support from our community and sponsors, we look forward to spreading FIRST and changing student’s lives in ways otherwise unavailable in our small community.

Come see GET SMART and over 60 more FIRST Robotics Competition teams from around Florida, the nation and the world at the Orlando Regional March 11 & 12!

Go Team!
