It’s time to meet GET SMART, team 3556 of Lake City, FL!
FIRST Robotics Competition team 3556 has introduced a love for STEM and robotics in our hometown of Lake City, Florida. By mentoring 17 FIRST LEGO League teams and two FIRST Robotics Competition teams, we embody the ideals of FIRST: gracious professionalism, academic integrity, and a fueling passion for STEM.
We successfully inspired the creation of 17 FLL teams, with four being new this year and 11 the year prior. In the fall, GET SMART plans to create an all girls FIRST Tech Challenge team. We envision starting more FIRST programs in our community and beyond, making FIRST available to as many students as possible. Additionally, we hosted a county-wide robotics expo in 2016 to showcase the FLL teams of our region. Our first annual, “Build Like A Girl” workshop was also held in 2016, spreading the ideals of FIRST to younger girls. As a result, our focus on girls doubled the number of female members on GET SMART.
Strong relationships with our sponsors make our dreams a reality. Crews Engineering Services and Trademark construction have provided funding and mentors for our team since our rookie year in 2011. PotashCorp White Springs has also provided funds since our inception, enabling us to start 12 of our FLL teams. Florida Gateway College became a large sponsor by providing their facility and technical equipment for our county-wide FLL Robotics Expo for the past tw0 years.
Over the past seven years, Team 3556 has been honored with various awards: the Gracious Professionalism Award at the 2011 Florida Regional, the Judges Award at Tempest N’ Tampa in the same year, the Finalist Award in the 2012 Orlando Regional, the Finalist and Woodie Flowers Awards in the 2016 Orlando Regional, and the Gracious Professionalism Award at the 2016 South Florida Regional. Team 3556 is more than a team, we are a family. We build together, we bond together, we go beyond together.
We are GET SMART, and this is what we do.
Come see GET SMART do their thing March 10 and 11,at the 2017 Orlando Regional!
